Meaning & History

Perhaps from Sino-Vietnamese 薄 (bạc) meaning "miserable, poor" and 寮 (liêu) meaning "neighbourhood, village". Alternately it may be derived from Khmer ប៉ុស្តិ៍ (poh) meaning "post, station" or ពល (pol) meaning "troops, forces" and លាវ (leav) meaning "Lao". This is the name of a province of, as well as a city in, Vietnam.
