Meaning & History

From the ethnonym for the Burgundians, an East Germanic people who moved westwards beyond the Rhine during the late Roman period.

Bourgogne was a region in east-central France once occupied by the Duchy of Burgundy, and later by the House of Habsburg. It was combined with the former region of Franche-Comté to create Bourgogne-Franche-Comté.
