Meaning & History
Dieppe, New Brunswick, was named after Dieppe, France, a coastal city in Normandy. The French name Dieppe likely comes from the Old Norse word djúp (djúp = "deep"), referring to the deep waters of the port. The Canadian city was renamed Dieppe in 1946 to honor the soldiers, many of them Acadian, who participated in the Dieppe Raid (1942) during World War II.
