Meaning & History

An archipelago in the South Atlantic Ocean on the Patagonian Shelf and an overseas territory administered by the United Kingdom and claimed by Argentina (known in Spanish as Islas Malvinas). It is derived from Falkland Sound, the strait separating the two main islands, named in honour of Anthony Cary, 5th Viscount of Falkland.
