Meaning & History
Lake Ilmen is a large lake in Novgorod Oblast, Russia. A historically important lake, it formed a vital part of the medieval trade route from the Varangians to the Greeks.
Etymology:
Ilma-järvi — "lake of (bad) weather" or "heavenly (upper) lake".
Or from ylä- means "upper" (in relation to the Volkhov River).
Or from Slavic etymology comes from the word ил, meaning "mud", "silt" with the suffix -мень (similar to "сухмень", "рамень", etc.), resulting in the meaning "muddy, silted (lake)", which fits well with the South Russian ильмень meaning "small lake".
