This is the name of a city in Japan's Shimane Prefecture. Izumo-taisha (出雲大社) (or Izumo Grand Shrine) is located in the city.
This is also the name of Izumo province (sometimes called Unshū - 雲州), an old province that, today, consists of the eastern part of Shimane prefecture.The place name consists of 出 (shutsu, sui, i.dasu, i.deru, da.su, -da.su, -de, de.ru) meaning "come out, exit, go out, leave, protrude, put out" and 雲 (un, kumo, -gumo, zumo) meaning "cloud."
