Meaning & History

This is the name of a sovereign city-state and microstate bordering France on three sides and the Mediterranean Sea on one side.

The name is derived from Monoikos, a name Ligurians used for a nearby 6th century BC Phocaean Greek colony. Monoikos is made up from Greek words monos meaning "alone, single" and oikos meaning "house," which results in the meaning of Monoikos as "single house."
