A combination of the names of the constituent departments of Nord, meaning "North" (the northernmost department of France) and Pas-de-Calais "Strait of Calais", the French name of the Dover Strait.

Nord-Pas-de-Calais is the former northernmost region of France, which was combined with Picardy to create Hauts-de-France.
