Meaning & History

The meaning of the name is not certain, but it is widely believed to be of Cham origin. The first element, Phan, may come from Eastern Cham Pandarang, itself derived from Sanskrit पाण्डुरङ्ग (panduranga) meaning "white god", an epithet of the Hindu god Vithoba. The second element, Thiết, most likely comes from the Cham name ꨨꨟꨭꨩꨤꨪꨔꨪꩅ (Hamū Lithit) meaning either "farming neighbourhood" or "seaside hamlet". This is the name of a city in Vietnam.
