Meaning & History
Evolved from earlier 仙臺; originally 千代 ("a thousand generations"), due to the presence of a temple with a thousand Buddha statues in Aoyama. The kanji were changed by daimyō Date Masamune, perhaps so that the castle would prosper as long as a mountain inhabited by an immortal hermit. The kanji that make up the name today are 仙 (sen), meaning "hermit", and 台 (dai), meaning "plateau"; the name thus means "hermit on a plateau".This is the name of the capital city of Miyagi Prefecture, Japan.
