Meaning & History
A city in India, derived from Arabic سورة (surah) meaning "surah", the name for the chapters of the Qur'an.According to legend, a local merchant originally suggested for the city to be named Suraj or Suryapur, from the Sanskrit word for "sun". Feeling that the name was too closely associated with Hinduism, the local Muslim king altered it to Surat.
