Meaning & History
Derived from Latin Tolentinum, of uncertain origin. The first element could be related to Tolosa (see Toulouse), Toletum (see Toledo), or the river Tolerus, or from a derivative of Proto-Indo-European *delh₁- "to split". The second element *uent- "rich in" is common in place names, while the last element is unknown. It could also be related to the Illyrian tribe name Taulantii. This is the name of a city in Central Italy.
