I also think it's a very cute nickname for Camille. When I saw the heading of your post, before I read the message, I was thinking I'd say, "Cammie is very cute, but it should be a nickname for Camille" so our great minds are thinking alike. The only name other than Camille that I can think of that it could be a nickname for is Cameron, but I hate this trend of surnames on girls so I don't recommend that.
I don't think Camille is too common at all. I've only known one my whole life, years ago, back in high school, though Camille was my mother's middle name. I pronounce Camille kah-MEEL, and so did the Camille I knew in high school, but I remember there was one teacher who liked to jokingly call her CAM-e-lee.
My mother hated her middle name, along with her first name, and always seemed embarrassed by it, but she was a woman with mainstream thinking and not a lot of imagination. I like Camille, but not enough to use it.
I've only heard of one real-life Cammie, and that was one I read about. In a biography of Margaret Mitchell, I read that she based the character of Prissy in "Gone With The Wind" on a real-life servant she'd once had whose name was Cammie. Aren't I just a fount of useless information? Arent you glad I'm here to fill your head with factoids?
So to sum up, Cammie is a great nickname for Camille. I'd like to see someone use it.
