I love May. It's so sweet and simple. I don't think it would be weird if the child wasn't born in May; it really makes no difference to me, when it comes to month names. You could also spell it Mae to avoid that if it bugs you (but personally, I like May better.) I prefer it by itself rather than as a nickname. And I don't know any Mays, but May is my grandmother's middle name (she is Nancy May.)
