Meaning & History
The first element, Uzbek, is of uncertain etymology. One theory suggests that the name is a combination of Turkic uz meaning "genuine" and the Turkish military title beg meaning "chieftain, master", ultimately from Sogdian bek. The second element, ستان (-stān), is confirmed to be a Persian suffix meaning "land, place of", "country". Uzbekistan is a former Soviet state and a present-day nation in Central Asia.
