Meaning & History

From the name of the Bruneian Empire (see Brunei), which is believed to be derived from Sanskrit वरुण (varuna) meaning "ocean, water" or referring to the Hindu god Varuna. A local legend suggests that the name may be derived from the phrase baru nah meaning "there!" or "that's it!", which was supposedly declared by Muhammad Shah, the first sultan of Brunei. This is the name of an island in Southeast Asia divided between Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei. The Indonesian name for the island is Kalimantan.
